The piano-lacquer exterior and glossy gray interior treatment make the Pavilion line stand out, as do HP’s extra features. The improved-for-Vista QuickPlay 3.0 utility lets you access music, video, DVD content, and more without going through the OS, and the tactile multimedia control buttons above the keyboard should be copied by other makers. A 1.3-megapixel webcam is built into the bezel for video chats and Web conferencing. Another feature other notebook-makers should rip off: the dual headphone jacks on the front edge, which let you share a movie in the back of the car without having to buy a splitter.

Build and Design:

The design of the dv9000 is excellent. It is much thinner and lighter than I had anticipated. The chassis is a very strong plastic, there is no flex anywhere on the body of the notebook. The screen will twist if ample force is applied, but is very sturdy for a 17″ screen. When I push on the lid, no ripples are produced on the LCD.

Screen:

The screen is one of the biggest things that attracted me to this notebook. As someone who relies on their screen for contrast and color accuracy, this screen has been nothing short of amazing. There are three options for customization regarding the screen: WXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1440×900); WSXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1680×1050) (which is the option I chose); and WXGA+ Ultra BrightView Widescreen (1440×900). The resolution differences are straightforward enough, but the Ultra BrightView does confuse some people. The difference between Brightview and UltraBrightview is the number of lamps lighting your LCD. Typical screens only have one lamp, while UltraBrightview contains two that light your screen. The outcome is a much brighter, and sometimes crisper screen. I would have chosen this option, but I value a higher resolution, and most screens are bright enough for me as it is.

Processor and Performance:

The processor I have is the Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 (1.66ghz). The Core 2 processors are currently the best mobile processors on the market. The T5500 is the middle to low-end of the Core 2 models, but doesn’t even break a sweat with everything I have thrown at it.

Benchmarks

The Intel Core 2 Duo offered with this notebook is the “low end” 1.66GHz version, but still offers very good performance, I got a Super Pi calculation time to 2 million digits of 1m 18s. That’s slower than the under 1 minute results that 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo processors get, but still demonstrates the processor can chug through calculations fast.

HP Pavilion DV9000 Battery:

The HP dv9000 battery that comes with the dv9000 is an HP dv9000 8-cell Lithium-Ion battery. The laptop averages about 3 hours of battery life with low performance usage and a dim screen, an amazing number for a notebook this big. With more demanding usage however, it gets around 2 hours. The Dell Inspiron 6400 (also sold as the Inspiron e1505 via Dell Home) is a laptop that meets you. It’s pretty light and portable (like the Inspiron e1405) and offers high performance and great media options (like the Inspiron e1705). Basically, you get the best of both worlds, at a reasonable price. Before we begin reviewing anything, here are the specs of my system:

Build & Design

The Inspiron 6400 feels very sturdy. It doesn’t feel flimsy, and doesn’t look like things are going to get loose anytime soon. Opening and closing of the screen is not too loose or too tight. One hand is sufficient enough to move the screen, provided the notebook itself on a stable surface.

The notebook design itself is slightly above average. The silver paint looks very appealing, but not when combined with the white bumpers. Overall this laptop can’t compare to the XPS series, but its design is good enough to catch some eyes.

Processor & General Performance

If you are a multi-tasker, you will love the Core Duo. For example, You were installing software, playing a video, and chatting on Windows Live Messenger at the same time with no troubles. Start-up time is very quick once you get rid of the annoying stuff Dell includes.

Noise & Heat

For the most part, the laptop is very quiet. When doing normal tasks such as word processing, email and Internet you don’t hear it at all. When doing more intensive tasks or prolonged use, the fan kicks in. This fan isn’t loud, but it isn’t quiet either. It’s not loud enough to bother you though. Heat is a small issue.

Wireless

The Intel Wireless card (Intel Pro Wireless) is very good using my standards. Dropped connections were limited and it was easy to use. You can easily shut it off when you are not using it by pressing Fn + F2. For this card, you can use the software Intel provides or the one Windows has, Windows Zero. I personally prefer Zero because it’s easier to use.

Battery life on the 6400 is very respectable. Under normal tasks (WiFi on, 75% brightness, Windows Media Visualizations), the battery lasted about 3 hours and 15 minutes. With WiFi off, and playing games with low brightness, It was able to get about 3 hours and 34 minutes. Dell didn’t modify the big case of the XPS M1730 in any way since the upgrade with 8800M GTX SLI video card. Features like LED backlight, additional display for gaming, and striking design are the same. Also the robust workmanship did not change. So, we refer to the  review of the XPS M1730 with 8700M GT SLI for a detailed discussing of these aspects.

Dell also didn’t modify the good input devices too, so we’d like to refer to the former review regarding this aspect too. Typing with the illuminated keyboard is user-friendly. However, you can fatigue when typing for a long time. The touch pad once again proved to work precisely.

This test sample was also equipped with 1920×1200 pixels 17″ WUXGA panel with reflecting surface. The average brightness of 220 cd/m²  is similarly good than the one of the former M1730 (compare with 213cd/m² of the former review). However, when displaying a black picture, a visible uneven illumination got obvious at once.

Despite its good brightness the display reflects heavily in bright environments (rising sun in the office). So, it is to our opinion not fit for daily work. However, because of its good maximum contrast of above 640:1, it’s a nice computer for gaming sessions or watching motion pictures in the evening.

World in Conflict

The integrated benchmark of World in Conflict shows a complex fight and should be an upper limit. We reviewed with the following settings: 1024×768 – high – DirectX 10 with an average of 31 fps. You can run this game smoothly at best with these settings.

Call of Duty 4

This up-to-date shooter, proved to be playable in full HD resolution, i.e., 1920×1200 with an average of 88 fps. The minimum frame rate (Level 1) was 60 fps. So, you can enjoy this game without flickering – even on-line matches are possible.

Age of Empires 3 – Asian Dynasties

The relatively demanding real-time strategy game by Microsoft demands especially for multi-player games much from CPU and video card. The review proved that the XPS M1730 is ready to cope with these demands.  The game was well playable (20-60 fps) with the native resolution of 1920×1200 and all setting on high (except from the footprints). However, sometimes there were short interrupts (0 fps).

Doom 3

This shooter, which is based on OpenGL, is a classical scary shooter. It can be played with highest resolution and highest number of details.

Quake 4

The same was true for Quake 4, which is based on Doom 3′s engine. Even with the detail level ‘ultra’ it was possible to play smoothly with an average of 60 fps.

F.E.A.R.

Fear, another scary shooter, supports only DirectX 9. Even at a resolution of 1600×1200 and highest detail level it was possible to play Fear with an average of 56 fps.

Crysis

Today’s most hardware demanding game, Crysis, was even a heavy load for the two 8800M GTX in SLI connection. The game was with a high detail level only reasonably playable with XGA resolution (in between it flickered time and again). You’ll need to try different settings to find one which is most convenient for this game.

Application performance

Due to two 200GB hard disks combined in a RAID 0 array the performance is very good for applications. This way the two 200 GB hard disk have a performance which is as good as the one of the currently fastest 3.5” desktop hard disks, however, at the greater risk of data loss, and less capacity. So, the XPS should also be sufficiently powerful for demanding applications like video editing, image processing, and software development. If the intended field of operation is CAD or 3D rendering you should maybe prefer a notebook of the Precision series, which is equipped with certified video cards.

The impact of the new high-performance video cards on fan control is most obvious. Overall all measured values are higher than of the (nearly silent)   M1730 with  8700M GT video card. Even if idle, the noise level of the fan is at least 34 dB (compare with the hardly audible 31.2 dB of the former review). This is about the level of other well-known DTR notebooks.

The maximum noise level of 45 dB also clearly exceed the 37.7 dB of the 8700M GT version. Despite being relatively loud, we didn’t feel that the noise is obtrusive.

Temperature

The temperature emissions are very similar to the ones of the 8700M SLI Version. The fan, which runs more frequently and faster, compensates for the higher temperature emissions of the 8800M video cards, Therefore, the maximum surface temperature is 41.4°C, which is alright. The palm rest areas stay comfortably cool too, so, there is no impairment of serviceability caused by heat.

Speakers

There was also no difference regarding speakers compared with the former review. The sound of the four speakers is clear and good. Basses are audible, but, not as good as of notebooks with extra subwoofer. Overall the maximum volume is alright, however, it could be better for music or DVD playback.

As expected the battery runtime is indeed very short. During our review it ranges from 60 to nearly 90 minutes. In comparison with the 8700 GT SLI model, the maximum runtime, measured when idling with minimum brightness, and without wireless communication modules, fell from 110 to 86 minutes in our test.

Because the XPS is also very heavy and, therefore, not really mobile, the short battery runtime is not really crucial.

The Dell XPS M1210 is a new 12.1-inch screen portable laptop that features the Intel Core Duo processor, rotating 1.3MP web camera, built-in EVDO and an Nvidia Geforce 7400 graphics card.  The XPS M1210 features a new design for Dell laptops and offers possibly the best performance on the market for this sized laptop.  The XPS M1210 is the ultimate mobility notebook. Starting at about 1.98kg, it’s a lightweight traveler that you can take virtually anywhere.

Vista Ultimate adds another dimension to the M1210. In addition to running Vista’s 3D interface at full speed, you also get all the entertainment features. This includes the enhanced Windows Media Center Edition. All you need is a USB TV tuner to record and watch live TV. The content that you recorded can be edited using Windows Movie Maker 6, which now supports the DVR-MS format (Media Center’s recording format) and is built into Windows Vista. Aside from capturing and editing footage from a DV camcorder, Movie Maker 6 is now compatible with high-definition and DVD widescreen formats. These resource-intensive tasks are, of course, made possible by the system’s high-octane components.

Performance is nothing short of spectacular for a laptop this small. The 2-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 is the same standard-voltage, dual-core processor that powers the Lenovo ThinkPad X60 (Vista). It seems as if 2GB of RAM is the way to go for ultraportables running Vista. You virtually eliminate any type of choking caused by Vista’s 3D interface or memory-intensive tasks, such as executing my Adobe Photoshop scripts and running virtualization software. In addition, the M1210 has something rarely found in ultraportables—discrete graphics. The system loads the nVidia GeForce Go 7400, a midrange graphics chipset that will let you perform moderate 3D graphics rendering and even play 3D-intensive games such as Company of Heroes. Just be sure to run the 3D games at low resolutions (1,024-by-768). The 85-Wh battery may add to the weight, but it sure does wonders for battery life. On my DVD rundown tests, the M1210 actually beat out the ThinkPad X60 by 2 minutes, taking 3 hours 47 minutes for the battery to drain.

The reviewed notebook was equipped with a 9 cell 85 Wh (7600 mAh) lithium ions battery and an integrated charge display. The battery runtime are very good and promises a long mobile operation. We measured a minimum of about 2.5 hours and a maximum of about 5 hours. During WLan operation we measured a battery runtime of 3.5 hours.

Nevertheless, we observed a slight problem with the battery: The release button stuck, and we were unable to remove the battery from the case. Certainly a problem, which needs to be fixed by the Dell service.

I recommend getting at least one extra battery if you’re highly mobile, such as doing cross country flights, the 9-cell is what you’ll want. If you’re just bopping around town or campus then the 6-cell should suffice. If you’re at a desk all day then the 6-cell is best since you won’t need battery life anyway. One good option is to order one 6-cell and one 9-cell battery.

I got a 6-cell dell xps m1530 battery and the optional extended life 85 whr 9-cell replacement dell xps m1530 laptop battery. Using the 6-cell battery under normal usage (office work and screen brightness at half) I got around 2.5 hours of battery life, which isn’t bad. With the 9-cell it was an hour longer at 3.5 hours.

Comparison between Dell XPS M1530 and Dell XPS M1330

There are some notable differences other than size between the M1530 and M1330 however. The M1530 can be configured with a more powerful Nvidia 8600M GT graphics card for boosted gaming performance over the XPS M1330 that only offers up to the Nvidia 8400M GS. The M1530 also offers up to a 2.80GHz Intel T7800 processor, whereas the XPS M1330 tops out at an Intel T7500 2.2GHz processor.
