Due to widespread piracy of the Windows operating system, Microsoft implemented strict measures since the advent of Windows Vista to ensure that piracy can be curbed. This includes adding a minimum limit to the number of times a key can be used for activating Windows. While this might restrict piracy, it can become quite inconvenient for users. If you for instance run out of the activation limit of your Windows 7 key due to frequent re-installation of the operating system, you will have to either call Microsoft support for resolving the issue or purchase a new activation key. A better alternative to repeatedly activating Windows and running out of your allocated limit can be to use 7Token Manager. It’s a one-click solution to backup all important information and then restore it to activate Windows 7 offline.

With 7Token Manager, you can back up Windows 7 activation key along with certificates and tokens to restore them later on freshly installed Windows in order to bypass the restriction imposed on number of times one can activate Windows through single license. Since you can activate Windows online for only 10 times with one license key, it fetches all the information which Microsoft Windows online activation wizard fetches from your system while activating Windows and backs them up. After installing Windows, you can restore all the information with license key to activate your copy of Windows without going through online activation process. This not only makes Windows activation process easier but saves you from wasting another usage count of purchased license key.

To backup Windows key, certificates and tokens, click Backup.

All information will get saved in a Backup directory residing in 7Token Manager. It can be quite useful to backup not just your Windows key but also server certificates with the help of this app for easily restoring them later.

To restore your information, make sure that the Backup folder is present within the 7TokenManager EXE file directory and click Restore.

7Token Manager works on Windows Vista and Windows 7.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A70 laptop. Picked it up on eBay without an AC adapter. I tried several adapters rated 19v as required but shy on the required amperage. I was using a 450watt one. I noticed it would charge the battery OK when the laptop was off but once in windows it would not charge the battery. I read some threads above that pointed to anything from a bad motherboard, voltage regulator power supply or battery problem. Long story short, I bought the proper AC adapter for it, 19v 6.3amps and voila, problem fixed. It now charges in Windows. So if anyone has the same problem, that is how you fix it. Spend the money and get the right adapter for your laptop. Hope this helps someone.

This is very important to choose the right AC adapter for your laptop. The output voltage MUST be exactly the same. If your laptop requires 18.5V you must use 18.5V adapter. The amperage should be the same or higher. If the laptop requires 4.74A adapter, you’ll have to find an adapter witch provides 4.74A or MORE.

It runs off the battery just fine, but it doesn’t switch to ac power when you plug it into the wall. If you pull the battery out and plug it into the wall it runs great off the ac power adapter. If you put the battery back in, it will immediately switch to battery power. If you turn the laptop off it will charge the battery back to full. I replaced the power adapter with the exact one required and the battery to no avail. I tore the laptop down and looked at the power jack and it looks good and tight and I saw no breaks in the contacts and the solders looked great,…but then it also runs great with no battery, off of ac power and never dies.

That sounds like a problem with the motherboard. Apparently there is something wrong with the battery charging circuit on the motherboard. I’m afraid that you’ll have to replace the motherboard.

Usually when I plug in the charger it makes one little

Beep

But today

it keeps beeping and the monitor blinks.

If the laptop makes a lot of beeps on startup, usually it indicates a problem with the keyboard. Most likely you have a stuck key and the laptop “thinks” you are pressing the key.
You can find out if your problem is related to the keyboard using the following method.
1. Remove and unplug the internal keyboard. You’ll find instructions in the service manual.
2. Plug in an external keyboard and start the laptop.
3. Test the laptop.

If the laptop works fine with an external keyboard when the internal keyboard is unplugged, most likely there is a problem with an internal keyboard and it has to be replaced.

when the lap top is off and charger plugged in the battery lite is orange and blinking…

Isn’t it normal? Maybe it’s charging the battery?

Laptop battery does not charge

With the growing complexity of laptops, notebooks and netbooks, figuring out why a laptop battery does not charge is not easy. Laptop batteries that suddenly die or notifications like ”laptop battery not recognized” trigger valid reasons for suspicion. Even more – simply replacing a laptop battery is an expensive affair and certainly not always the solution. Nowadays there are many components involved in charging a laptop battery. In this story you’ll find a simplified approach to narrowing down a laptop battery problem and possible leads to a solution.

Simple laptop battery charging diagnosis

The simplified diagnosis assumes the following;

1) Laptop works on AC power – laptop battery doesn’t charge.

2) Laptop battery has worked before in the same laptop

The approach assumes the smart battery system architecture developed by Duracel and Intel. A DELL Latitude D610 business laptop is used as example.

Although the information here might not apply in all cases, it still might shed light on reasons why a laptop battery does not charge.

Diagnosis approach

The diagnosis approach is based on the observation that all laptop battery charging components are active when the laptop is powered off with the AC power adapter connected. This is true for most laptops and eliminates the involvement of the main processor in charging a laptop battery.

Laptop battery charging is managed by a second processor on the laptop motherboard. In this approach the second processor is identified as the POST (Power On Self Test) controller. The controller executes initial test during power-on and manages laptop battery charging. Although this might not apply for all laptops, the observation mentioned earlier still stands.

When the laptop is powered-on information about laptop battery charging can be monitored through either through the BIOS setup screen or for example in Windows or Linux.

The laptop battery charging diagram below shows various components involved in charging a laptop battery. The blue and red marked text indicates click-able text and loads pages with more information.

Laptop battery charging diagram

Diagnosis diagram when a laptop battery is not charging

Laptop battery charge controller and program code

The POST controller (Power On Self Test) is a second processor or CPU on the laptop motherboard. It remains active when a laptop is powered down unless the AC power adapter is disconnected. The POST controller manages laptop battery charging and communicates with the laptop battery and AC power adapter.

The POST controller also runs test when the laptop is powered on. For DELL laptops the POST controller outputs diagnostic codes through the CAPS, NUM and SCROLL lock lights. After POST tests are completed successfully it starts the main CPU which executes BIOS program code for further testing.

The POST controller for a DELL Latitude D610 is the SMSC LPC47N354 – MacAllen III – Ultra IO controller. Unfortunately there’s little public information available but it seems this chip executes POST functions using a 8051 based micro controller. The latter is a highly popular multi-purpose embedded CPU capable of doing quite a bit of work in the lower dungeons of the DELL Latitude D610 laptop.

Laptop battery cell charging controller

The battery controller in DELL Latitude D610 batteries is the custom made BQ20864 – called a battery gauge – from Texas Instruments. The battery gauge chip tracks battery cell charge and discharge information for the laptop battery charge control circuit. There’s no public information available about this particular battery charge controller – most likely it’s protected information only available to DELL.

Windows 7 has native support for accessing battery gauge chip registers, however the feature seems to have maturity problems.

Laptop battery charge control circuit

The laptop battery charge control circuit supplies power to the laptop battery – it handles the actual charging of the battery cells in the laptop battery. The main functions performed by this circuit, among others:

DC-DC voltage conversion from the AC power adapter to the Laptop batteries

Start, Control and Stop the battery charging stages from bulk charge to trickle charge

Communicate with the slave which is the charging controller in the laptop battery

Communicate with the master which is the POST controller

For the DELL Latitude D610 the MAX1535B Battery Charger chip is the center of this circuit. The DC-DC conversion produces quite a bit of heat making it easy to locate this circuit when charging the laptop battery while powered down.

Laptop battery charging indicator LED

The laptop battery charging indicator is a multicolor LED emitting flash codes in several colors indicating the status of the charging process.

Laptop processor

The laptop processor executes BIOS program code after the POST controller completes the Power On Self Tests. During BIOS execution a laptop can generate diagnostic codes on the screen or through beeps. After BIOS tests are completed successfully the laptop processor tries to boot the operating system on the hard disk, CDROM or USB drive / stick.

The DELL Latitude D610 has a Intel Pentium M processor.

As you use your battery more often, the battery loses more and more capacity until it finally won’t accept a charge and goes flat. Replacing a battery is easy, but the new battery price could be so steep that it costs more than the notebook is worth. Buying a refurbished battery can drive the price down even lower, but what if you are super cheap? Well, we are going to cover this last option, which means tearing apart your old battery and fixing it yourself.

Dell E1705 Battery Specs:

Voltage: 11.1v

Capacity: 53WHR

Original Cells: Sony SF US18650BR

Replacement Cell Specs: LG 1650 mAh li-ion Battery w/ tabs

Teardown Process

Breaking the battery apart was probably the single most painful moment of this entire article. I had no documentation to work with, the plastic halves of the battery were glued together, and all I had was a mini snipper. I first started by peeling off the top sticker exposing the open framework with cells in view. After this I took my little snippers to the plastic, and cut away piece by incredibly small piece till the entire top was removed. I had black plastic bits flying everywhere; I think even into someone’s can of soda. The end result was a brutalized battery case that looks 100 percent safe for future use.

Once all of the excess plastic was removed, I could get to the cells I would be replacing. All of these were glued in place, so prying them out with a screwdriver was the only option. As I slowly lifted each group form the plastic case without shorting any circuits, I took my clippers to the metal bridges to fully disconnect the batteries. During this time I also made special note of the wire leads off the charging circuit and where they connected for future use.

Finding the Correct Replacement Cells

Who would have thought finding something as simple as US18650BR batteries would be so hard? It actually took two of us about 30 minutes to find a site that sold equivalent batteries. Now the standard name for the battery size we were looking for was 1650, and we picked one at random since they had quite a few options to choose … and I was too lazy to run the math on the correct cell capacity. With the cell selection locked in I ordered the batteries, and sat patiently until they would arrive.

Build Day

Once the new batteries arrived at the office, I got to work on prepping the batteries for installation. I verified battery orientation from the pictures of the old assembly, and started to solder together pairs of cells. I used some old wire to bridge together each group on the positive and negative side, and hooked the first battery group to the red power lead. Next step was soldering together the second group, attaching it back of the first group, and soldering both charging leads in place. Last was the third group soldered to the back of the second, and attaching the black lead to the rear of the battery group. The final result doesn’t instill much confidence of a non-firey demise, but it was finished. To add a layer of safety I placed some packing tape over the exposed battery groups, and mashed the “rebuilt” battery into the bottom of the notebook. To the surprise of all those around me, the battery did not ignite into a ball of flames, and actually started charging.

Performance

The Dell E1705 laptop was not the pinnacle of mobile performance from the start, but with the old battery it was difficult to get more than 25 minutes of life before the notebook shutoff. Anything above that value with the rebuilt battery would be a mild success, so I crossed my fingers and hoped that an hour of smoke inhalation (soldering) wasn’t wasted. The results of the rebuilt battery ended up being roughly 47 minutes of battery life, and a Dell battery warning saying the battery had reached the end of its useful life. While the cells were fresh, the batteries charging circuit hard already reached the point of no return. No matter what we could do, it would never reach the charge levels of its prior brand new state.

Conclusion

With the labor involved in rebuilding the battery, and the $53 spent on parts, the DIY rebuilt Dell battery never got anywhere near the performance of a new battery. Although it was a fun process the money could have been better spent on a professionally refurbished battery or a brand new OEM battery from Dell.com. Even if the rebuilt battery did achieve results similar to those of a brand new module, I don’t think anyone in our office would have trusted that notebook to charge unwatched for any significant period of time. With brand new batteries exploding left and right, do you really trust something you rebuilt yourself?

Pros

Tons of soldering smoke that freaked out coworkers

People don’t mess with you after they see this in your hand

Cons

Bringing this through airport security creates a stressful and unhappy situation

Are you looking for a powerful Application launcher, Give Blaze a try. Blaze is a free open source application launcher. This multipurpose application doesn’t only launch your application on the fly but can also do other tasks like performing calculations, performing in place calculations, creating emails, searching for stuff on the Web and more.

Blaze can be also useful for laptop if you are running laptop on Dell INSPIRON 1200 battery. You can configure blaze to shut down some high energy consuming application or activities when your laptop is unplugged. Blaze can automatically find whether your laptop is running or Dell Latitude D610 battery or AC power and can take appropriate action to shut down processes that hog your vgp-bps11 battery or vgp-bpl8 or vgp-bpl8 battery.

Another strength is that Blaze understands what you are trying to launch even if you make a typo. For example if you type ‘moziwa fairfox’ instead of ‘Mozilla Firefox’ it understands that you are trying to open Mozilla Firefox and it will open the right application.

Below are some screen shots of Blaze

Blaze is still in Beta phase but it works and works very well out of box. This application works very similar to Launchy. To read more about Launchy please visit Ben’s blog about Launchy. While testing this application I found that Blaze is a little heavy on memory side compare to Launchy. Please note that Blaze works on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7, in both 32 & 64 bit versions. You should have .NET 3.5 Framework installed on your machine. The .NET framework 3.5 is free to download from Microsoft’s Site.

Repair battery step two : repair battery shell

Points and then encountered trouble: it was soon filling power (twice as fast than normal), in the course of discharge to 70% of the time will suddenly prompt “The Compaq Presario V3000 Battery is dead, please insert the AC power supply” warning capacity to show an immediate 5%. The beginning of a long time thought it was not using the Acer Aspire 3680 battery leads to memory effect, we should do like a few of the deep cycle. But after several full charge, after release and found that the improvement is very small, only about 45 percent take power, with half an hour, we still have the problem. The largest may be the Dell INSPIRON 1520 Battery pack in more than one section or “black sheep” in trouble, have to pull it out!

Red several times in the subsequent discharge cycle every place is full of electricity and have finished after the battery power to open, measuring the voltage of each battery pack to find a group of “different”: the per-charge when it voltage to reach 4.2V or even more than the first, leading to cessation of the entire VGP-BPS11 battery charge, and discharge when it was first to reach 3.6V or even less, is a typical decline in capacity. And the largest of which may still be a battery problem. This group of cells separated from the measurement of voltage, respectively, found that a battery voltage is low, only about 3.2V, a separate charge of their voltage quickly reach 4.2V, less than a minute of time, The Dell INSPIRON 6000 battery basically has no capacity to speak with a light bulb when the discharge was found, it has the fundamental output current that can not provide even less than 1mA, measuring its resistance, has reached more than 2K seems to have been scrapped.

As a result of a “shock therapy” after the restoration of the normal cells, but not charging voltage reached 4.0V, it seems that it is “the pot boiled dumplings – do not put out an electric” soldering it back a vgp-bps13 battery discharge followed by the use of time of up to 90 minutes, has been near normal level of the battery.

However, when the charge is quickly filled, and disturbed mind up soon. Was a discharge, it is less than half an hour, open a test, just fix the bad and the battery.

Not always have to use a “heart to recover,” ah, so the value on the lost.

This section of the final decision to do a battery operation, and then they can not, then replaced the batteries. Peeling of the batteries, removed the insulation near the cathode cap and found a slight corrosion around, but I do not like battery leakage and traces, as well as save. With halogen lamp from the battery positive and negative, there is no response Taking into account the previous “Anatomy” the same symptoms when the batteries are inside the battery with the battery cathode output between cathode cap (the pressure on, not welded) oxide occurred, resulting in increased resistance and end-of-life battery , and the internal battery is still good. Oxide layer in the case is not serious as long as the battery cap to strengthen the internal contacts and battery resulting in the battery does not leak if damaged can be restored. The simplest way is to step up the battery forceps are negative (one pad insulation film), while measuring the Dell Inspiron E1505 Battery output voltage (or current), while vertical extrusion batteries, once the battery output voltage is increased, the current increase (the change is often the jumping in nature, relatively large changes) to stop immediately, the HP Pavilion DV6000 Battery will be able to repair.

The top edge of the battery cathode cap next to the mouth ventilation valve with cutting pliers, then immediately measured and found that the battery has been restored, the output current increases immediately. In order to insurance purposes, the battery cap in the week between the edge of the chisel a few more in order to increase the contact area to ensure that the use of effects.

The battery to re-wrap, solder back to the XPS M1530 battery pack, charge, discharge. The use of time to reach more than 90 minutes.

Again measured with test software and found that the current capacity of smaller 38.88Wh from the original into a 32.07Wh, a decrease of nearly 20 percent, but this is the real discharge process, there is no jump of dropped. After several red discharge cycle, the capacity has increased by some. Use has been made to the current two months, everything will be all right.

Repair battery step one : calibrate your cell

First of all, the test voltage to zero, the machine can not start naturally, can not use power when charging (the battery light does not shine).

Disassemble the battery, more or less talk about the situation inside the battery.

Battery in a total of 9 can be placed 18 millimeters in diameter, length 65 mm core CGH18650 models the location of lithium batteries, Panasonic’s 22 batteries in parallel, three groups of series (OK, then my new SONY VGP-BPS8 Battery, the same, it appears that is 6), there is a very fine control with a single chip – the protection of the circuit, the circuit to the computer a total of five output contacts, respectively, are negative, the clock and data.

First of all, check the sticky in the battery temperature detection probe (temperature resistance), and temperature protection insurance, are also normal. Test-retest the battery voltage of each group, in which two sets of battery voltage of 3.8V, normal; a battery voltage of 0V, appear to have lapsed. The total battery voltage of 7.6V, then the failure of the battery pack has not yet open, then measuring the internal resistance was very small, almost in a state short-circuit.

First of all, failure to deal with SONY VGP-BPS10 Battery, battery repair based on previous experience, the failure of the battery may not be completely damaged, can be activated through a number of methods, in particular the performance of state for the short-circuit the battery. The voltage of the battery to 0 with one end connected to the circuit board off line to avoid damage to circuit boards in operation. Open-circuit battery voltage after the re-survey, is still 0V, ruled out the possibility of short-circuit boards.

For short-circuit the battery failure, the method is more effective high-voltage electric current moment method, using the old IBM power supply (my back-up power), 16V maximum 3A output string on the multimeter (a tributary of the current file 20A), first negative power supply Even with the battery anode, and cathode power multimeter then red table pen, table pen with black multimeter battery cathode touch, speed, faster as far as possible, the former two degrees to see the multimeter has reached close to the 2A (moment) and the third on only 0.4 A about an immediate stop, measure the battery voltage has been restored to about 3V, the internal battery short-circuit that point has been an instant high-current boil (If you do not damage the battery to stop immediately, even if so, battery life and capacity have been the impact, if conditional, or recommend replacement, but if the replacement, then try to replace the entire battery pack are). However, the batteries need to be a separate charge (if the battery charge of the whole group, this will result in the other two groups had mesenchymal cells), plug in the charger to start charging ammeter to monitor during the charge current to 500mA or so, current for the 3.6AH battery pack is small, but the charger is the charge current is limited and a small current to the xps m1330 battery charge is good for the resumption. After about six hours, the charger showed the battery is already full, continue to re-charge for about two hours, remove the battery, measure voltage has reached 4.2V, with bright halogen bulb in the flashlight (3V, 500mA) to discharge its , bulb sharp discharge current of 700mA, the battery pack that has been basically restored, continue to discharge until the battery voltage down to 3.8V, the purpose of the two groups with the same battery voltage, charging time together so as not to overcharge the Back to the whole battery pack battery circuit welding.

Since the dell inspiron 6400 battery voltage while the circuit board there is no output, then, surely have damaged circuit boards, after observation, negative input circuit board (take battery) output (then output contact) is directly connected, and the positive input and output of by a high-power thyristor control, the thyristor remains cut-off state, that is, the control circuit has not been output control signals to the SCR control terminal, or simply the SCR has been destroyed. (Measured after the control signals that I did not) because I do not have the ability to repair single-chip microcomputer. IBM to take into account the protection of the BB more perfect, is about to run out of battery power will automatically shut down when, this battery is intended to be used for entertainment, therefore, need not be too concerned about, so I decided to shake the hp battery protection circuit, directly depend on BB’s protection circuit. SCR is in the input and output pin (that is, cathode circuit board input and output pin) between the solder on a small 2A fuse, fuse 2A select the reason is based on current usage, the largest in the computer power consumption , the current does not exceed 1.9A, 2A capacity sufficient unusual circumstances (for example, short-circuit accident) but also to ensure that the fuse of the time, but also play a role in protection.

In fact, directly to the SCR control terminal so that it can also be a high turn-on, but taking into account the current the battery must be a reason to burn, and the reasons for the identification of protective measures taken before or better in order to avoid greater loss.

Well, the battery power has been the first non-stick, and on the machine to try it! Normal boot, plug in the power immediately after the charge on the flashing lights are up, the way when charging the battery with a random look at battery information management software, was also displayed, the battery circuit board This shows that the single chip is still working.

Batteries battery is a Panasonic, the time the factory in June 2000, the first time in October 2000, the design capacity of 38.88Wh, the current capacity 38.88Wh, is charging cycle: 0 times.

Oh, do not know how to engage in, the vgp-bps8 may be burned when burning confused, even cycles to the zero, Now it maybe a new battery.
